Erskine veterans charity unveils Falklands Memorial Garden

ONE of Renfrewshire’s best-known charities takes center stage at a popular display as it unveils its Falklands Memorial Garden.

The themed show garden called ‘Shadow of the Brave’, created by veterans charity Erskine, will be on display at the Ideal Home Show Scotland event at the SEC in Glasgow from today to Sunday.

Made by veterans of the Erskine Reid Macewen Activity Centre, the garden depicts the typical landscape of the Falkland Islands and marks the 40th anniversary of the conflict.

The garden showcases the rugged coastline, sandy beaches and wildlife, including the life-size sheep and penguins many of them have known.

Thanks to SP Energy Networks, donated seed pods will allow visitors to plant a seed in the garden barrels to create a “Forget Me Not Garden” and leave a message for a loved one.

At the end of the show, the barrels and seeds will be replanted in the Erskine Falklands Memorial Garden within the Veterans Village on the Erskine Estate.

For those unable to attend the show, the online digital garden allows people to create their own “forget me flower” and leave a message at erskine.org.uk/falklands-garden.

Ian Cumming MBE, managing director of Erskine, told The Gazette: “Without the army of volunteers supporting Erskine over the four days of the show, we could not achieve what we have achieved.

“The Erskine Falklands Garden – Shadow of the Brave is a truly remarkable work to commemorate, which is a hugely important part of our country’s history.

The Gazette:

“Without the generosity of our friends and supporters, the Erskine Garden would not have been built. We must thank SP Energy Networks for the labor and hours generously put into building the garden. Without the supplies from MKM Building Supplies who once again donated all the material for the garden, they would have nothing to work with.”

Richard Foster, SP Energy Networks, said: “It is great to be working with the Erskine Veterans Charity again and to be part of the incredible team spirit that is evident during this project. . Although I have had some favorite gardens over the past few years, I feel this will be a very special year as we will remember everyone who was part of the Falklands task force.

Lee Smith, MKM Building Supplies, added: “MKM Glasgow is very proud to support Erskine and the care they provide to the veterans who have given us so much.”
