Ex-Glenrothes soldier wins top prize in charity lottery for veterans

John Johnston has won the top prize in January’s Veterans Lottery draw.

Fundraising is managed by the Veterans Foundation.

John – better known to many as Ian – spent 24 years in the Black Watch regiment, serving all over the world, from Northern Ireland to Canada, Hong Kong and Cyprus.

The 63-year-old discovered his windfall after returning from a round of golf.

He said, “I couldn’t believe it; I was shocked.

“You don’t think this will ever happen to you – it’s just an amazing feeling!”

John started playing the Veterans Lottery in August 2021.

He added: “I was a funeral director and buried a lot of other Black Watch soldiers, young boys killed in service, so that really brings him home, you know.

“The ex-servicemen I golf with have all said they’ll step up to help as well.”
